Day 2: Tuesday, October 4th

Tuesday’s appointment is a general checkup-to make sure Emma is a good candidate for surgery at this time. After a series of basic tests and questions, she is declared ready to go. Fortunately, in the last couple of weeks she has gained a good amount of weight. She now weighs 7 lbs 14 oz, just over a pound more than her birth weight, at 2.5 months old.

Next, we meet with the cardiologist, the anesthisiologist, and the surgeon. They are friendly, and they talk us through what they’ll be doing and what to expect.

The Surgeon is very quiet and serious. He tells us the surgery will last about 4 hours total, about 1-1.5 hours on a heart/lung machine, and that there is a 2-3% risk of major problems. This is a common surgery for them.

We’re done by 2:00, and go back to the apartment to rest.

Kyle and Laura Rogers are in town for their daughter’s eye surgery, so they come over for supper around 6:00pm. My dad arrives about 7 o’clock-he wants to be here for the surgery tomorrow.
